“What the fuck is that supposed to mean?” Avery blurted, twisting her face in disgust…disgust at me.

I stared at Avery over our now-ruined dinner. I understood why she felt betrayed, but things could have been worse. I wasn’t sure what exactly she knew about my conversation with her father, but I was still recovering from it. I should have told her, but I was ashamed, and my ego got the better of me. As I grew closer to Avery, my shortcomings for her already blaring, I didn’t want her to have another weight to hold over my head.

I had to say something. I couldn’t just sit here like a smug asshole continuing to eat my food as she stared at me, not touching hers. “Yes, we met. And I also met Brutus. How come you never told me your family was getting a new dog?”

“Because I had no fucking idea,” she hissed. “If you haven’t noticed, I’m not always in tune with my family’s plans.” Her gestures grew wild, and she ran a hand through her thick golden hair. She looked especially sexy tonight, her hair glowing in the dimmed light and the contrast of her dark roots. Something about the juxtaposition between the colors in her hair drove me wild, and this simple towel wouldn’t be able to hide my desire for her.

I remained silent. The only noises were the clinks of my silverware and the continued echo of her harsh breathing. And then a small whimper coming from my bedroom caught me off guard until I remembered who was in there: Lily. I bolted from the table and retrieved the small black puppy from her crate. I lifted her and didn’t have her paws touch the ground until she was on her weewee pad. Within two seconds of landing on the white mat, Lily relieved herself. I praised her with a meaty treat and walked her back to her pen without saying a single word to a waiting Avery. I dragged my feet back to the table, where Avery cradled her chin and drummed her fingernails against the glass table, producing a menacing tap. I lowered myself into my chair but continued to stare at her, hoping she’d say something. Her delicate eyebrows pulled together, and I couldn’t stand the silence.

“Your dad was being protective from what I took away from our conversation,” I said with my hands spread out in limbo beside me.

She rolled her eyes and shrugged. “Why is talking to you so hard sometimes? I feel like you lied to me.”

“I didn’t lie, Avery. I just didn’t tell you,” I replied, trying to control the tone of my voice.

“Is there anything else you’ve ‘forgotten’ to tell me?” Her voice was cold, tinged with betrayal.

“Would you stop? I fucked up, okay? Is that what you want to hear? Well, there, I’ve said it.” A sudden flash of anger rocketed through me; this was not how I wanted tonight to go. Just the opposite, actually. This conversation would not go anywhere productive with our tempers simmering to a rolling boil.
